Our History

The origins of the Town of Twisp date to July 30, 1897, when homesteader Henry C. Glover laid out and platted a town he called Glovers-Ville. That same year a small store was established, and shortly thereafter, a post office. In 1898 Glover succeeded James Colwell as postmaster of the town, which by then was inexplicably called Twisp.

In the 1950s, Chase’s Store was in the space that would one day become Glover Street Market. Joanne Chase owned and operated the store, and she was beloved in the community. Many Methow residents who grew up in the 50s fondly remember buying shoes at her store.

Michael Adams, Curtis Haire, and Robin Baire owned the first health food store in the valley, which they called Sohams, a Vedic word meaning “I am that I am,” emphasizing one’s connection to the universe or ultimate reality. The store was complete with iridology readings and foot reflexology in the back room. When the store didn’t catch on, they packed up their inventory of herb-filled glass jars, supplements, bulk foods, and books in a 1953 Willy’s Jeep to barter the store away at the Barter Faire in Tonasket, where they traded most of it in for a sturdy little horse named Joe.

Years later, the valley was ready for the next incarnation of this little health food store. Suzie, Kay, Ed and Flora purchased the building from Joanne Chase to start Glover Street Market.

After nearly twenty years of pouring themselves into Glover Street Market, Suzie, Kay, Ed, and Flora decided it was time for someone new to take up the mantle and move the store into its next iteration. Sharing food with their community had long been a way of life for the Patterson family, who often threw large impromptu dinner parties where their neighbors would sample new wines, exotic balsamic vinegars, regional cheeses, and fresh produce while the children ran in the woods behind the house. When the store came up for sale, they couldn’t resist the opportunity to serve the valley in a different capacity. After the purchase, they remodeled the entire store, built a wine cellar, and put in a breakfast and lunch counter.
